Word Study

First of all, my apologies for how scattered the Language Arts homework has been this week. With the short week we got behind a bit and then we all left it in our desks yesterday - phew thank goodness next week is back to normal!

The students are developing routines for word study this week. They have been learning what it looks like to work in groups and partners. They are developing skills for working with other individuals collaboratively. My hope is that they will understand how to compromise with one another and challenge each other's thinking.

Here are some pictures from word study today. Each day they have a "must-do" activity. Today it was a speed sort. They time each other to see how quickly they can sort their words into categories. After they complete their "must-do" they have "can-do" options. These are formatted in a BINGO card. When they successfully complete 5 "can-do" activities they are awarded a pick from the treasure box! This shows me that they used their time wisely, they developed study skills and they stayed dedicated toward a goal. I am looking forward to seeing who will be the first to complete a BINGO!

Tomorrow we will have a math test on comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000. We will also have a spelling test in the afternoon. You will be informed of your child's progress by Monday.

Thanks for all your continued support!

Loving third grade!

Students in room 14 are loving third grade. I think they are taking the responsibility of being the oldest at Spaulding School very seriously. They have been quiet in the hallways before school and after lunch, they have lead the Kindergartners during buddy reading, and they have taken on the 8 Keys of Excellence and modeled for the whole school. I am proud of them for making the some times difficult adjustment to third grade.
This week we will begin word study. Everyone will have the same words to study so that we can learn the process and procedures. Starting next week students will receive a list that is tailored to their individual needs. You will be notified of their words on the weekly newsletter.
I was very happy to see so many families at Back to School Night. I am looking forward to continuing to work alongside you and your family!
As always, if you have any questions about things happening in the classroom please do not hesitate to communicate with me.
Happy Tuesday!
